Pay4poop and Waste2energy

What we do

Hamza wants to leave his office job in Zanzibar and return to the soil. Night soil or humanure, that is. He wants to produce and sell pathogen-free organic compost while simultaneously ridding local waterways and lands of human feces. Open defecation, the practice of using streams, beaches, and pathways as a toilet is practiced widely across Africa.

Dr. Helen Fox, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) Conservation Science Director says, “The nutrients in poop and pee are this huge valuable resource that’s literally getting flushed down the toilet and then going out and harming the environment. If we can get over the ‘ick’ factor and turn that human waste into energy or fertilizer, we can basically solve two problems at once.”

BGW proposed a Pay4Poop pilot, valuing the waste in a local youth-led campaign to solve these two problems at once. We will supply Hamza’s brigade with gloves, masks, pooper scoopers, and rolling containers. After school crew members will scoop poop and bring it to Hamza’s weighing station for their payments. Hamza will use the humanure as feedstock for his Waste2Energy business, and address a social ill at the same time.

Take Action

There are two ways to make humanure safe for growing food. The low tech, inexpensive way takes 18 months to 2 years. The high tech, more expensive way takes 4 days.

A new Dutch/African venture operating in East Africa produces affordable community-sized anerobic digesters capable of processing food scraps, humanure, and animal manure; and creating grey water, BIOGAS and electricity. Their design is modular and scaleable. Consumer price is discounted due to the pre-purchase by the World Bank of 500,000 carbon credits.

Hamza is siting his Waste2Energy venture near a dairy farm, school, and restaurants. After a successful Pay4Poop pilot, Hamza plans to expand his operation to include other ‘waste feedstocks’ and produce other types of energy.

Investment Return

This is a waste to energy project. BGW is seeking a co-investor of USD 100K to kick start The Pay4Poop Pilot, and buy the anerobic digester to commence the Waste2Energy business After 1 year of operations, costs and benefits will be assessed and returns calculated for further investors.
